Dignitas International’s Teen Clubs provide lifesaving treatment and care to HIV+ adolescents in Malawi.

Medical programs like Teen Club are critical to ensure that quality health care is accessible to those who need it most. Recent cuts to global health funding have left Teen Club and our other medical programs at risk. Now more than ever, we need your help to make sure that the progress we have made over the last 15 years is not lost.

Help Save Teen Club.

AIDS is still the leading cause of death for African teenagers. It is also the second biggest killer of adolescents around the globe. In a resource-limited country like Malawi, there is a gap between pediatric and adult health care. A lack of youth-friendly health services leads to HIV+ teens being forgotten. As a result, HIV+ adolescents face a high risk of stopping HIV treatment putting their lives in jeopardy. Teens who are not on treatment regularly miss school due to infections, without access to youth-focused health care, HIV+ teens have become a lost generation.

By the time an HIV+ teenager in Malawi reaches 17, it is estimated that there is a 6 in 10 chance that he/she will drop out of treatment. The Teen Club program provides young people a safe space to receive their life-saving medication and learn more about managing their health challenges. They receive counseling, gain access to sexual and reproductive health services and are able to connect with other HIV+ teens facing similar challenge. At Teen Club, HIV+ young people learn broader life skills to help them grow and thrive.

Access to treatment and care is a key step to fighting the global HIV epidemic. Our research shows that teens who attend Dignitas’ Teen Club are 3.7 times more likely to stay on treatment than teens who are not in these Clubs. When you support Teen Club, you are helping teens to stay healthy and have hope for a brighter future.

Despite demonstrated results and profound need, the health of thousands of young people in Malawi is currently in jeopardy. With recent funding cuts to global health programs by the U.S. and other donors, many innovative and effective programs are at risk, including our Teen Clubs, and the gains we have made over the past decade.

In 2018 we supported 3800+ teenagers living with HIV. With potential funding cuts, the lives of thousands of young people are in jeopardy – something must be done! We’re hoping you will consider responding to this urgent call for support – please donate today.
